What is a developmental disorder?

A developmental disorder is a psychological or neurological problem in childhood or adolescence, as a result of which those children or young people cannot normally participate in daily life.  Examples are dyslexia, autism, ADHD ...

Some disorders are congenital or develop during early childhood. They have a hereditary cause or arise from a major event. Certain developmental disorders continue to play tricks throughout life, while others are only temporary in nature. Many developmental disorders occur together or are associated with other problems.

A developmental disorder causes children to have more difficulty with certain activities than their peers. The consequences are expressed in various areas: on a physical, emotional and social level. Negative reactions from the environment can add to the problems.
