Objectives

Child allergologists are pediatricians who specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of allergies. They assess symptoms, perform allergy tests to identify the responsible allergens and propose appropriate treatment plans, which may include avoidance measures or diets, emergency care protocols and allergen immunotherapies. This specialization is currently not recognized in Belgium.

The increase in these conditions is a real challenge for pediatricians with a special interest in allergy, who are currently few in Belgium.

Given the multisystemic and diverse presentation of allergy, cooperation is needed between the different pediatric subspecialisms (allergology, pneumology, gastroenterology, dermatology, NKO).

Paramedics such as dieticians, psychologists and nurses specializing in allergy are also crucial in the multidisciplinary framework of this patient group.

Political measures are also needed to promote access to specialized care and to provide for reimbursement of certain treatments such as immunotherapy. Decisions regarding prevention measures and environmental policy will also be crucial in this! In this way we can improve the quality of life of the children involved.
